Project Glow’s inaugural edition at RFK Festival Grounds in Washington DC drew over 40,000 attendees – setting the bar high for future Insomniac festivals to come in the region.

Insomniac has earned its reputation for hosting major, multi-day music festivals across America. With 25 years of experience under their belt, they continue to pioneer dance music culture and expand its reach wherever it can.

Recently, Insomniac announced their partnership with Club Glow, an established electronic music event promotion company on the East Coast. To reinvigorate rave culture on this side of town, Insomniac acquired Club Glow and its two acclaimed venues – Echostage and Soundcheck.

Club Glow had previously operated on the fringes of Los Angeles, but this partnership with Insomniac will bring a major festival to one of America’s most iconic and historic cities. Project Glow promises thoughtfully curated stages of music, delectable food options and beverages as well as performances by internationally-recognized artists.

Additionally, the organizers are dedicated to giving back to the community. They have joined forces with Sasha Bruce Youthwork – a philanthropic partner that provides services for homeless youth in Washington D.C. – and a portion of ticket sales will go towards this organization.

Something in the Water

On Juneteenth weekend, electronic music producer Pharrell Williams brought his Something in the Water festival to Washington D.C. He wanted to bring together family and friends for three days of music to commemorate his cousin who was tragically killed by a police officer while visiting Virginia Beach. With this event, Pharrell hoped to turn the page on racial tension in Virginia Beach and promote peace through music.

The event is free and has a strong focus on community. It features performances by various genres such as rap, R&B, Afrobeats, gospel and go-go music; plus there’s also a pop-up church service plus free food from local eateries.

On Saturday night, Pharrell headlined the Sun Stage with a set that paid homage to his musical legacy. He performed classic hits like “Frontin'” and reunited with guests such as Clipse, Justin Timberlake, and Noreaga for an intimate performance.

In addition to moving the audience to tears, Pharrell’s set also demonstrated his timeless artistry. He included visuals that reflected the longevity of his career, such as a ladder-sized screen set up in front of Sun Stage so he could observe people waiting for him to perform.

On Saturday night, there was a thrilling lineup of go-go acts from DC that showcased their sounds. Backyard Band, Rare Essence and TOB each played lengthy sets that even the most reserved dancers couldn’t help but get up and dance.

Sunday’s rap set from Earthgang was no less thrilling, featuring their dexterous delivery and crisp segues without interruptions. Through fan engagement, a live band, and new breakdowns of classic songs like “Stuck,” or a slowed-down, a capella version of “Down Bad,” everyone in attendance left feeling ecstatic.

The festival experienced a number of issues, from heat to overcrowding to safety concerns. On the first day, temperatures spiked significantly – leading to medical needs for some attendees.

Some concertgoers reported being robbed while at the festival. Others reported their cell phones being taken. Due to overcrowding, some couldn’t get in to see Pharrell or Phriends due to theft.

Tomorrowland

Walt Disney opened Tomorrowland at Disneyland as a “living blueprint” of future technology. The land would feature various attractions to demonstrate various futuristic capabilities, from transportation to space travel.

Over time, however, it has largely become an island of misfit toys with a collection of themed attractions but no unifying theme. This is particularly evident in modern times where many original attractions have been replaced with movie tie-ins like Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters, Monsters Inc. Ride & Go Seek and Autopia that showcase movies rather than actual future technologies.
